The modern plastic produce bag as we know it was the invention of an engineer from Sweden named Sven Gustaf Thulin. His design was patented by Celloplast in 1965, and for almost a decade they alone manufactured for Europe and North American. But in 1977 Mobil helped overturn the U.S. patent, which paved the way for American companies to offer their take on the plastic bag which leads us to 21st century where the U.S. uses more than 100 billion plastic bags a year!
