HOLLYWOOD, FL (PRWEB) Sept. 15, 2009 - As parents stock up on traditional school supplies such as pencils, pens, paper, notebooks and glue, health officials are recommending a few other items be added to the back-to-school supplies list: alcohol-based hand sanitizers (like Purell), tissues and hand soaps.

Since the best defense against the flu remains as simple as frequent hand washing with hand soap and water (or the use of alcohol-based Purell hand sanitizers) and covering mouths when coughing, teachers, aides and cafeteria workers will continue to push these common-sense precautions. Many schools have also adopted policies that include sending home any student who has a temperature of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

The new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations emphasize the importance of the basic guidelines of flu prevention: stay home when sick, wash hands frequently with soap and water (or alcohol-based hand cleaners such as Purell), and cover noses and mouths with a tissue when coughing or sneezing (or a shirt sleeve or elbow if no tissue is available).

These CDC has also issued guidelines specific to schools to help reduce the spread of H1N1 and other flu illnesses and include:
General Guidelines:

• Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Alcohol-based hand cleaners such as Purell hand sanitizers are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way.
• Avoid close contact with sick people.
• If you are sick and sharing a common space with other household members in your home, wear a facemask (also available at ReStockIt.com) to help prevent spreading the virus to others

For Students and Parents:

Stay home when sick: Students with flu-like illness should stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever, or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medicines. They should stay home even if they are using antiviral drugs. The same rule applies to parents. Don't go to work until 24 hours after there are no signs of a fever.

Stay at home of someone is sick in your household: Students who have an ill household member should stay home for five days from the day the first household member got sick. This is the time period they are most likely to get sick themselves.

For Schools:

Separate ill students and staff: Students and staff who appear to have flu-like illness should be sent to a room separate from others until they can be sent home. CDC recommends that they wear a surgical mask, if possible, and that those who care for ill students and staff wear protective gear such as a mask.

Routine cleaning: School staff should routinely clean areas that students and staff touch often with the cleaning supplies they typically use. CDC does not believe any additional disinfecting of environmental surfaces beyond the recommended routine cleaning is required.
