What to look for in Skype phones, VoIP phone for Gizmo

It was only a couple of decades ago that there was only one choice for American telephone consumers. Now, with the proliferation of VoIP phones and phone service, Americans don’t even need a traditional phone company. Millions of consumers have decided to forego traditional phone service, opting for newer technologies like Skype phones or the convenience hands-free cordless VoIP phones for Gizmo.

VoIP phones (short for Voice over Internet Protocol) are the fastest growing alternatives to traditional phone company service – though many major phone companies, especially the ones that offer Internet service, are now also offering VoIP phones. Such services allow people to carry on conversations across computer lines.

Most VoIP phone services offer the same features available from traditional phone services, along with some extras. Some VoIP services can also support video calling and multiple phone numbers, which can even have different area codes.

These phones and services tend to be less expensive than the ones offered by traditional phone companies because of the way voices and information is processed. By sending the information across existing computer connections, VoIP providers don’t have to spend money on new lines, cables, satellites and other pieces of expensive infrastructure.

Without the need to purchase costly infrastructure, most of the VoIP providers’ research and development money goes to creating relatively inexpensive software, or basic pieces of hardware, such as Skype phones or cordless VoIP phones for Gizmo.

Most VoIP systems connect through regular computers, but there are some that connect directly to high-speed lines. An Analog Telephone Adapter connects directly to a LAN line, allowing regular analog phones to access the lines.

VoIP phones have become so popular that large companies are bundling the service with their other, more popular services, often for no fee. VoIP phones and services are frequently offered by cable companies and Internet providers.

Cellular companies are getting into the VoIP business, too. Multiple companies are now offering no fee VoIP phones. These phones work like regular cellular phones, but also have the capability to tap into a user’s local VoIP service. This cost-saving feature is the main reason VoIP cellular phone sales continue to increase.

Companies such as Yahoo and AOL offer a service similar to VoIP known as VoIM. In these instances Voice over Instant Messaging is frequently a software-based add-on, running on top of the provider’s instant messaging services. These services are still somewhat limited, but frequently cost consumers the least.

While VoIP phones do seem to be the future of land-based telephone use, it does have some flaws. Unlike traditional phones, VoIP phones rely on the same electrical outlets as other household appliances, making them vulnerable to power outages.

VoIP phones also don’t have a static street address like traditional phones do, so emergency calls to 911 don’t automatically generate an emergency address at call centers. Many VoIP services are now offering a feature called Enhanced 911, which takes a little longer to send information, but essentially provides the responder with the important information.

RestockIt.com buyer’s guide:
There are choices. Whether choosing a no-fee VoIP phone plan from a cable or Internet provider, or software-based platforms like skype phones, or even VoIP Cellular phones, sales of VoIP services continue to be one of the fastest growing portions of the communication industry.

All plans have their benefits and drawbacks. Potential customers should consider the cost of the plan and the reliability of the service foremost. Then decide whether a more reliable hardware or cheaper software-based system better serves their needs.

Finally, they should look at whether the other add-on features (cordless VoIP phones for Gizmo or the ability to have multiple phone numbers, for example), are actually services that can and will be used.
