Gardening tools get lawns ready for summer
A properly-stocked storage shed filled with lawn and garden supplies and gardening tools is a must when looking to get lawns ready for summer.
Summer is officially here, which means it’s time to head to the storage shed and make sure all the lawn and garden supplies, including gardening tools, are ready to make the lawn look its best.
Great lawns don’t just happen. Having the best looking lawn in the neighborhood takes preparation. The first step is to go to the garage or storage shed to inspect the equipment.
Check to make sure the rakes and other gardening tools are accessible and are still where they are supposed to be. And do a little routine maintenance on the lawn mower.
If you didn’t clean out the under carriage before putting the machine away for the summer, now is the time to do it. Make sure it is free of dead grass and twigs. Also, make sure the motor is in top running order. This would be a good time to change the oil and air filter.
Next, make sure the storage shed is stocked with lawn and garden supplies like fertilizer and weed killer. Many stores are holding beginning of summer sales this time of year, so it’s the perfect time to stock up on these sorts of supplies.
The next step is to grab the rake from the trusty supply of gardening tools and de-thatch the lawn. If old grass clippings or fall leaves are allowed to build up they can choke a lawn, and that is hard to fix in the middle of summer.
While raking the lawn, be sure to keep an eye out for weeds and dead patches. Well worn areas often can use a little boost from fresh grass seed. Once the thatch is removed from the lawn, grab the seed from the lawn and garden supplies and apply it to the areas that could use a boost.
This is also the best time of the year to apply weed killer. Obviously, the weed killer can be applied directly to weed patches, but depending on the weed killer, it can also be applied to the entire lawn to stop the weeds from being able to take root.
Finally, grab the fertilizer from the storage shed and apply it to the lawn. Be careful not to go overboard, though. While the proper amount of fertilizer can help produce a green, luscious lawn, over-fertilizing a lawn can burn it out. Be sure to check the manufacturer’s recommended dosage before applying.
Following these tips will help ensure happy lawn. Once the lawn preparation is completed, it’s time to head back to the storage shed to ensure the spade, tiller and other gardening tools are ready for a summer’s worth of gardening. But that’s a project for another weekend.
